Yarnbury
Grassington Moor lead mining trail
Summary
Grassington Moor lead mining Trail. A short but fascinating hike, visiting the remains of Grassingtons disused lead mines in Yarnbury. It is a place to imagine what life was like on the moors during the active times of the lead mining industry. Including some of the underground flues that you can still walk through leading to the smelt mill chimney!
For such a short walk, there is plenty to see - plus the walking is extremely easy on foot. The low moorland with no significant climbing through the walk from Yarnbury to the Smelt Mill Chimney helps contribute to this. I didn’t expect to see so much on such a short moorland walk. Therefore, I spent a lot of time running around exploring the derelict mines, Smelt Mill Chimney, and the underground flues. This fascinated me. However, I wish I had remembered my head torch on some occasions. Mainly, because the tunnels seemed to go on for miles into complete darkness!
Meanwhile, after exploring the lead mines. The hike continued among gravel tracks through Grassington Moorside. Surrounded by fantastic views of the rolling fells and valleys of the Dales below.
