Malham Cove, Gordale Scar & Janet’s Foss

Malham, Gordale Scar & Janet’s Foss. A historic, yet magical landscape that is truly fascinating. Somewhere not to be missed if you’re ever visiting the Yorkshire Dales. Every time I visit it blows my mind, to think this is naturally made and has been here for 1000 of year’s. It’s no wonder people from around the world come here. It’s one of those places I come back to time and time again and never get bored. Although I have visited Malham many times, I can confidently say my favourite time to visit is midweek when it’s quiet and less crowded. I find the experience feels so much richer and empowering.

I won’t write about the history; I’ll leave that for other websites like the one I have linked below. I don’t want to steal the thunder of other people’s work. However, I will mention about the circular walk around all three landmarks, that is, Malham Cove, Gordale Scar & Janet’s Foss. It’s fantastic! At only 4.5 miles it would be rude not to take in the natural formations, but fear not, if you only want to see either the Cove or Gordale Scar via Janet’s Foss that’s okay too. However, you might as well go the full hog and see it all if you visit! There are many attractions to see and experience, you can even extend the walk right over to Malham Tarn! I have yet to do this.

The walk takes you through woodland plantations, deep valley gorges, magical waterfalls, limestone formations and along peaceful exposed rolling terrain. Not to mention the views are spectacular, especially at the top of the 70m/230ft Cove once you have climbed all 400 steps. If you don’t fancy the steps, not a problem. Go the other way around towards Janet and Gordale Scar. The ascent is a lot gentler to the top of the Cove. Also, if you want to see the Cove first but don’t want to be bombarded by the crowds of people, venture over to the YHA as there is a great little path along the Malham Coves Fields. That way you have the view all to yourself. Whichever way you go, the possibilities are endless!

In Malham itself, there are plenty of attractions. The Lister Arms and Buck Inn for some well-deserved grub, the Old Barn café for a real dales ice scream, campsites if you wish to sleep under the stars, the YHA youth hostel for a cosier night if you don’t fancy having a wild wee, and a visitor centre just in case you get lost. Malham has something for everyone to enjoy and should be on everybody’s list to visit.
