Drawen Moor, Jubilee Tower, River Roddlesowrth and Witton Weavers way

The Hike

We parked in Sunnyhurts woods car park which is free of charge. The walk climbs to Jubilee Tower on Darwen Moor up a steep path. At the top the tower has panoramic views over Lancashire which on a clear day is breathtakingly beautiful. For an even better view, inside the tower there is a spiral staircase that has a viewing platform at the top. After the tower and leaving the moor, it heads south and west along the northern edge and crossing to the River Roddlesworth in Tockholes Plantation. Wondering through a peaceful and calming forest!

Once you emerge from the woods, there are the ruins of Hollinshead Hall which opens up onto well surfaced paths that head to the open moors or Darwen. There is a steep climb to the top of the moor which is where we stopped for lunch. There wasn’t a person insight, just miles and miles of moorlands and the sound of the brisk wind, as we indulged in our lunch and lots of coffee ready for our next part of the hike. Next, paths are extensively followed across the moor, first eastwards and then northwards, eventually heading back to the tower. Finally, a descent of the moor is made on the same path used at the start of the walk back to the start at Sunnyhurst.

Returning to the car was a cold beer waiting for us, as we sat down feeling exhausted but overjoyed at the amazing day, we had walking.
