Fairfield horseshoe

Summary

The horseshoes is a 10 mile circular ridge walk in the Lake District.  You can start the hike from either Rydal or Ambleside, it doesn’t matter too much and neither does the direction, Clockwise or Anticlockwise. The hike takes you on the following ridges, Nab scar, Heron pike, Rydal fell, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low peak. On a clear day you can see as far as Helvellyn and the loop of the ridge walk.

I did the hike in November so the weather was very unpredictable. It was cold, wet and very foggy so I didn’t see much of the ridges which is shame. On the summit it can very confusing if it is foggy, luckily, I brought my Garmin so I was able to follow the route. However, on the decent the clouds cleared and we could see the valley below which was Ambleside and lake Windemere. The views are amazing! The hike is undulating so it can be quite difficult, especially if you aren’t used to walking that sort of distance and terrain.
