UCI World championships

A time when the world championships came to Yorkshire

About

It’s a rare opportunity that you have to witness the world championships for bicycle road racing organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale in a local town! The event was held in the town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire. This is a week where professional cyclists from around the world compete to win the rainbow jersey that they get to wear for a year before someone else tries to win it the following year. Races such as individual time trials, team time trials, track cycling, cycle-cross, mountain biking, BMX and indoor cycling take place. There are also championships for disabled competitors too.

There are all sorts of events taking place for fans such as live Zwift races at the Zwift Draft house, live podcast interviews with the likes of Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe, you can also take part in casual rides to test out some of new bikes for 2020. This gives you an opportunity to meet like-minded people that are also passionate about the sport too.

I watched the women race on the Saturday in Harrogate where Annemiek van Vleuten took the stage. On the Sunday it was the men’s race, it was a wash out with riders dropping out due to being too cold as it rained constantly all day! Mads Pedersen took the stage for the men. Although it was throwing it down crowds still came to see the riders perform, this is what makes the championships so special!
